In the heart of French Flanders, some typical local sports are still praticed in Godewaersvelde.
The "Nord Pas de Calais" with Flandres, is the only part of continental France where there is still fights of cocks. A 1963 law only allow tem in case of continuous traditions, that's why, the Blauwershof pub become, twice a year a cocks fighting field. People bet screming in a crazy atmosphere. Regarding this tradition, we can quote a personn from the county, the general De Gaule : "Because we eat cocks, they have to die in a way or another."
Huge poles are situated on the public garden of Godewaersvelde and on the top of the Cattes'Hill. For the tournaments, some 'birds" are placed on the top of the mast, players will have to make them fall with an arrow. This sport that you can find in the North of France, in Belgium and the Netherlands seems to have been encouraged by the lords in middle-ages in order to train a maximum of bowers.
On a track of about 20 meters long called "bourloire", players try to lunch their "ball" as closed as possible of the target. The ball is a circular pice of wood of about 3 pounds weight. The "Bourloire" of Godewaersvelde is opened everyday after 17:00 and all over the day on Saturdays, and Sundays.
