Welcome in Godewaersvelde

The village center ant the Cat's Hill cannot sum up Godewaersvelde. There are, indeed, plenty of monuments all over its country side..

The chapels

Chapelle ND de la délivrance
Chapel "Our lady of relief"

Most of the chapels are dedicaced to the Virgin Mary. It's said it is thanks to the building of the "Our lady of the mount" abbey. They can be the goal of a nice walk. Some of them has original storys. For example, around 1960, the chapel "OL of Lourdes", situated at the crossing of the D 948 road and "la rue des chats" collapsed following a traffic accident. However, the statue of Mary that was inside stayed intact and did not move.

Just behind, there is a map with all the oratory of the town:

The british cimetery

Cimetiere britannique de Godewaersvelde
The british cimetery of Godewaersvelde

The two world wars left their marks in Godewaersvelde. Going out of the village , you will find a commemorative site. The british cimetery was created in July 1917, between the battles of Messine and the one of Ypres, when three sorting offices for injured people were moved to Godewaersvelde.

The records give details on 968 gravestones of soldiers who wee british, australian, canadians and new zelanders and 19 german POW. Only one lady rests in that place, she was a british nurse of the terrotorial forces.
